Kathleen Petyarre was born in c1940, in the Utopia region, north east of Alice Springs, Northern Territory. Sadly Kathleen passed away late November 2018.
She came from a very talented and renowned family of artists. Her sisters, Gloria, Margaret (deceased), Myrtle (deceased) and Violet are all famous artists in their own right. Kathleen starting painting batik silk around 1977. Like many other artists she then turned to painting on canvas. In 1996 she won the Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Award.
Kathleen’s art were stories inherited from her mother and father and are about her country and her Dreaming Stories, including Women Hunting, Emu, Dingo Dreaming and her signature painting of the Mountain Devil Lizard Dreaming or Atnangkerre.
Kathleen’s considerable reputation as one of the most original indigenous artists has since been confirmed nationally and internationally by her regular inclusion in exhibitions at the most reputed museums and galleries. A book about her art, ' 'Genius of Place' ', was published in 2001 in conjunction with a solo exhibition of her works at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney.
Kathleen’s paintings can be found in public and private collections all over the world. Her work has been selected, along with just a handful of Aboriginal artists, for inclusion in the permanent collection of the Musee du quai Branly in Paris.
