Janet Golder Kngwarreye was born 1973 in Utopia, north east of Alice Springs in the Northern Territory.
She is a talented artist and was taught by her mother and grandmothers the story of Bush Yam (Anaty) The yam is a staple food of the Aboriginal people in Central Australia. It can be hard to locate, growing up to a metre underground. Yam Leaf and Bush Yam Dreaming are depictions of the plant’s use for medicine as well as food.
Janet also paints Awelye (ceremonial body paint). The women would paint these designs on their upper body during ceremony.
The Yam Flower is a style Janet has learnt from her grandmother Polly Ngale. After good rain Central Australia explodes into colour when the native plants flower.
Janet's distinct style for her story of Bush Yam Dreaming (My Country) was created in 2017 for Clare Valley Art Gallery and its captivating design and colour has made this style popular in galleries and homes around the world.
Janet is married to Ronnie Jungala Bird, who is also a respected artist with his Campsite Dreaming stories.
