Gloria Petyarre was born in c1945 in the Utopia region. Utopia is a small Aboriginal Community located approximately 270km north east of Alice Springs in the Northern Territory. It is a very remote part of the Northern Territory and has produced some of the most well known artists in Australia. Sadly, Gloria passed away in June 2021. She will be missed.
Gloria first started her career in 1977 doing silk batik paintings, along with her sisters Kathleen, Violet, Myrtle and Nancy. Around 1989 she starting painting on canvas and in 1999 won the Wynne Prize at the Art Gallery of New South Wales. In the same year Australian magazine Art Collector called Gloria “one of our most collectable indigenous artists”.
This was great promotion for not just Gloria but also for Utopian artists and as a demand for Utopian art grew so did Gloria’s career. She travelled with her art to many countries and exhibited in France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Belgium, the Netherlands, Italy, the USA and Japan, and in galleries throughout Australia.
Gloria’s style of painting is mainly Bush Medicine Leaves, a style that she is credited with being the creator of and has become a very popular style in Aboriginal Art. She also paints Mountain Devil Dreaming a pattern of swirling coloured lines which imitate the tracks made in the sand by the lizard's tail, and a Big Leaf style of larger brush strokes.
Gloria Petyarre, is arguably the most famous and significant of all female Australian Aboriginal Artists living and working today.
Her works are held in the permanent collections of the Australian National Gallery, The Robert Holmes a Court collection, Singapore Art Museum and the British Museum, to name but a few.
